Macmillan Coffee Morning
Dorplan supports the charity Macmillan with a coffee morning for its employees. Macmillan is one of the largest British charities that provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer.
The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 28th September is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. They ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan. Last year alone they raised over £27 million and together we can make this another successful year.
How the world’s biggest coffee morning came about
The first ever Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990. It was a rather small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective they did it again the next year – only this time nationally. Since then, Coffee Morning has raised over £200 million for Macmillan.
Who Macmillan is
They are millions of supporters, professionals, volunteers and campaigners. Together they make sure you’re treated like a person – not just a patient – and have the support you need to live life as fully as you can.
History
Since Douglas Macmillan founded our charity in 1911, they have grown to be the UK’s leading source of cancer support, helping more and more people living with cancer.
In 1911, a young man named Douglas Macmillan watched his father die of cancer. His father’s pain and suffering moved Douglas so much, he founded the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer.
Douglas wanted advice and information to be provided to all people with cancer, homes for patients at low or no cost, and voluntary nurses to attend to patients in their own homes.Today much of Douglas’s legacy lives on. The charity have continually adapted the support they offer to ensure it’s right for people today, and will be right in the future too. Their determination to continually improve the experience of cancer is something that will never waver.
